The multi-million-euro project has been awarded under a 40-year concession to Marina Internacional de Marbella, a joint venture of business leaders from Malaga and the Costa del Sol who were the runners-up in the original 2010 tender.

What the Mega-Project Entails

The revamp will transform La Bajadilla into a state-of-the-art facility capable of accommodating both luxury mega-yachts and mid-sized cruise ships:

• 3.5-Fold Water Basin Expansion: The port’s usable water area will expand to three and a half times its current size.
• Tripled Berth Capacity: Berths will increase from 268 to approximately 750 berths.
• Major Coastal Engineering: Construction of a 1.13 km southern breakwater, a 450 m western breakwater, and a new jetty designed to channel the Primero stream.
• Modernized Fishing Port: A newly dedicated, upgraded sector for local fishing activities.
• Commercial & Parking Facilities: A vibrant commercial zone supported by an underground/surface car park offering 1,000 parking spaces.

Key Project Timeline

• January 1, 2027: Official handover of site management to the new concessionaire.
• 11 Months: Allocated timeframe to draft and finalize the executive technical design.
• 36 Months: Dedicated timeline for construction and marine works.

Regional officials, including Mario Muñoz-Atanet, Andalusian Regional Minister for Development and Mobility, and Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio Ramos, head of the Andalusian Public Ports Agency (APPA), joined Marbella Mayor Ángeles Muñoz to mark the milestone, hailing the overhaul as "brilliant news" and a landmark strategic investment for the Costa del Sol.
